Rheeven Redesign

I'm going to get Rheeven done first since he's one of the three main characters. As far as the original design for Rheeven goes, I really loved his outfit and how pointed his face was. But I felt he was too good looking. I wanted Rheeven to be a plain looking kind of guy to suit his struggle to be noticed as brilliant, rather than a handsome brain-box that could melt a heart from a mile off.
As always the first step in the redesign was to change his proportions. I made him more slender and, in terms of my style, gave him long legs (which I may yet lengthen further). I kept his outfit and toyed with giving him knee-high boots, but given that his bodyguard is going to have thigh-high boots I felt that that was plenty boot to be getting along with. So shoes it was. The hair is a more simplified, cartoon version of the original so there’s not much to be said about it. Next was the face. I completely changed it making him look plain. A long face, thick wide set eyebrows, a long nose, a pointed chin and a dimple are the main features defining his character. I will be changing his blue eyes to green or grey (which will depend entirely upon what colour I give D'rosk's) and I've kept his glasses.

So what are your thoughts?

Jen Redesign

As promised, here’s the first of the character redesigns - Jen. Her original design is first on the left of image two on the original design sheets. It’s not at the colour stage yet and she had her feet amputated in the scan, but I'm sure you can ignore that for now. Since I'm aiming to have something more western than anime I had to completely change the face and hair. I changed most of the design with the exception of the top half of her clothing but I tried to keep some of the essence of her. I made her look a bit more rough and ready to suit her personality a little better and naturally that also meant giving her trousers instead of a miniskirt. I gave her different proportions but I think I still have to give her bigger, more cartoon hands to suit my style. I'd like to keep the colour palette the same because it’s lovely and works perfectly. I might change her tattoos but I'm not sure on that yet so I'll have to wait and see.

So what are your thoughts on Jen's redesign?

Where it Began

Right.... where to begin....

For those who don’t know the back story of how I ended up doing this visual novel, here’s the relatively short version:

This whole thing started just over a year ago when the studio I was working for asked me to create a story around a set of characters by a talented artist (who can be contacted for commission here http://whipsmartmccoy.deviantart.com/ ). They are well drawn and look so much like the kind of characters I used to create; it was like looking into the past. What do you think of them?

Anyway, I was asked to create a fantasy story around these characters with no limitations so naturally I went wild. (I'm going to add in a separate page about the synopsis as soon as I figure out how). I changed a few bits and pieces about the characters, such as skin tone and names etc but mostly they stayed the same. Things were going well but unfortunately the studio hit financial problems and most projects were dropped. I was kindly given my project and all its assets and suddenly I was allowed to do whatever I liked with it. The first thing I decided to do was make the whole project my own. This meant changing the characters to fit my style so that I could illustrate it comfortably. There were so many wonderful things about these characters that I wanted to keep such as colour and most of the outfit design and hair styles. So I contacted the artist and told them I would be re designing the characters into something more me.

I'm going to upload them later and you can let me know what you think.

I'd be interested to know what kind of story others would have come up with, given these characters and no limitations. Feel free to share your version with me!

Hello!

This will be the first of many posts so I'm going to use it to say hello. As I'm still brand new to blogger it’s going to take a while to get the set out exactly as I want it so expect a lot of changes. I'm just having a poke around for now, going to test everything out so it will most likely be a bit of a mess until I've had a shot at everything. As some of you will know I'm setting this blog up for my upcoming visual novel "The Hadron Gateway". I intend on having a website as soon as possible but for now a blog is the next best thing. It’s about time the story got some presence on the web instead of hiding on my hard drive.

So without further ado, welcome to my blog and enjoy the ramblings!
